Storm started with their more experienced squad, giving their younger players a chance to watch from the bench and absorb what was required of them at this level. Thunder came out fighting from the first whistle managing to steel Storm’s advantage of first centre pass. Thunder had a point to prove to the crowd and the England selectors with many of their squad fighting for re-selection into the National Excel Programme. Their attack left Storm’s defence floundering in places, and having a shooter that never misses in their possession meant Simmonds and Holland certainly had their work cut out for them.

In the second quarter changes were made in defence and attack by Storm in an attempt to create more shooting opportunities and break down Thunder’s successful rhythm at the other end. Fran Desmond replaced Katy Holland at GD whilst Hannah Button replaced Hayley Brook at GA. Fresh legs certainly disrupted Thunder’s flow however were not enough to give Storm the edge.

Further changes throughout the game saw Storm catch their opposition up to within five goals, but this was not enough to topple the northern side. It was a hard pill to swallow for the new Surrey squad, with losing being an unfamiliar experience for all. The squad accepted that Thunder were the stronger, more together team on the day- and delivered in all areas of the court, however Storm are adamant that valuable lessons can be learned from the defeat. One positive is that the younger members of the squad have shown they can come out fighting in sticky situations and hold their own, and make an impact. We now have to make sure the entire squad return to the court stronger than ever to ensure they don’t give up their title without a fight. The next game sees them face Team South in early January.
